What is adult ADHD?

Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity that can affect daily functioning.
The exact cause is not fully understood, but it involves a combination of genetic factors, neurobiological differences, such as imbalances in neurotransmitters and environmental influences.
In adults not been diagnosed in childhood, ADHD often presents with less overt hyperactivity but with significant issues like procrastination, poor time management, and organizational skills.
They might experience chronic feelings of frustration or underachievement, frequently change jobs, or have tumultuous personal relationships.
These adults might also struggle with low self-esteem from repeated setbacks or criticisms, leading to secondary psychological issues like anxiety or depression.
The lack of diagnosis can result in a lifetime of adapting through less effective coping mechanisms, which might mask or complicate the underlying ADHD.

ADHD Diagnosis

Adult ADHD is diagnosed through a comprehensive evaluation that typically includes a detailed clinical interview to review symptoms, behavior, and history.

Diagnosis is often aided by standardized ADHD rating scales or checklists; a review of past academic, occupational history, and social experiences.

Additionally, other conditions that might mimic or coexist with attention deficit disorder in adults, like anxiety, depression, or learning disabilities, are assessed to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Criteria from the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition) are commonly used to formally diagnose ADHD in adults.

Distinguishing ADHD from similar conditions in adults requires the skills of an experienced physician or psychologist due to overlapping similar symptoms.

In adults, attention deficit disorder adult or ADHD often manifests as persistent difficulties with organization, time management, and completing tasks, which could be traced to childhood diagnosis.

ADHD Treatment

The primary medication options at an attention deficit disorder clinic include stimulants like methylphenidate (Ritalin) and amphetamines (Adderall).

Non-stimulant options, such as atomoxetine (Strattera), are also used, particularly when stimulants are not well-tolerated or contraindicated.

Other medications like bupropion (Wellbutrin), or even certain antidepressants, can be used especially in cases with co-existing conditions like depression.

The choice of medication at an attention deficit disorder clinic depends on individual response, side effects, other health conditions, and the risk of substance abuse.

Treatment plans are tailored to each adult’s specific needs, often requiring adjustments over time to find the most effective regimen.

Additionally, ADHD treatment in adults could involves various modes of coaching or psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy.

Ongoing Monthly Care

Only half of Canadians experiencing a major depressive episode receive “potentially adequate care.”

One-third of Canadians aged 15 or older who report having a need for mental health care say those needs were not fully met.

People with mood disorders are at much higher risk of developing a long-term medical condition.

People with mental illness are two times more likely to have a substance use problem versus the general population.

People with mental illness and addiction are more likely to die prematurely versus the general population.
